Hybrid metallo-dielectric nanophotonic platforms: how can we benefit from coupling plasmonic antennas and dielectric cavities?

Abstract – It has been recently proposed that nanophotonic platforms composed of metallic nano-antennas and dielectric microcavity could enhance light matter interaction further than what is allowed by its individual components by combining both strong field confinement and high quality factors. We further explore […]

Physicist Matthew Sfeir joining the faculty in the Photonics Initiative

Matthew Sfeir Associate Professor, Physics / ASRC Photonics Initiative Ph.D., Columbia University Sfeir will join The Graduate Center in January from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. As part of the laboratory’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials, his work focuses on enabling technologies for next-generation optoelectronic devices. He has received numerous awards for his work in photophysics, and in 2018 was named an “Inventor of the Year” by the global science and technology organization Battelle. He has served on several committees and advisory boards, including the executive committee for the Energy Subdivision of the American Chemical Society Division of Physical Chemistry; co-authored more than 80 journal articles; and secured five patents.

The Beauty of Science Now on View at the ASRC

Science and art converge in an unusual exhibition featuring images of brain cells, photos of trees, and paintings inspired in part by the eyes of endangered animals. The show, called Objects & objectivities: Convergences in epistemic divergence, is on display at The Graduate Center’s Advanced Science Research Center. The exhibition was funded by Vigdor’s PSC CUNY grant. The exhibit is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Dec. 21 at the ASRC (85 St. Nicholas Terrace, fourth floor, Manhattan).
